- Chinese telecom equipment supplier ZTE recently announced that shipment volume of its mobile phones based on China's TD-SCDMA (Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) technology surpassed three million units in 2009, a ten-fold increase when compared with that in 2008, the China Business News reported on January 22. As a result, ZTE's TD-SCDMA phone market share rose 20% year-on-year in 2009. ZTE expects its TD-SCDMA phone shipment volume in 2010 to total six million units, according to the source. In 2009, ZTE launched over 30 TD-SCDMA terminals, 40% of which were TD-SCDMA phones and 20% of which were data cards, and the company is poised to launch additional 30 TD-SCDMA terminals in 2010.

 

- As part of the agreement signed by their respective subsidiaries in Shanghai, China Telecom and China Unicom plan to jointly set up and share an additional 500 3G base stations in Shanghai in 2010, as part of their efforts to reduce total costs, the SinoCast Daily Business Beat reported on January 22. Through this tie-up, these two telecom operators will save up to 200 million RMB (US$29.4 million; US$1= 6.8 RMB) in total. In 2009, these two companies had shared 246 3G base stations, which helped both parties save up to 100 million RMB (US$ 14.7 million) in construction costs, 20,000 square meters of land, and one million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.
